Artificial intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, and decision-making.
It is certainly not Conscious Intelligence, like the fictional Cyberdyne System's Skynet, just yet.
At the moment, most artificial intelligence is based on gathering and reviewing large amounts of usage data to find patterns, for example Netflix, "Customers also watched..." or your credit card company contacting you about an unusual purchase.
It should make things more efficient and helpful as more data is gathered.

Smart cars will drive themselves and be able to make appropriate decisions, smart homes will heat and light more efficiently, smart services will predict when you need things and you'll have more time to put you feet up!
